Sons and Daughters, it’s time to get your race cars ready for the annual Pine Car Derby! Official CVNSND Pine Car kits are available for sale for $5 each by contacting Rapala Tribe Chief Adam Dible at afdible@gmail.com. Please note that you will need to purchase your pine car(s) from the longhouse to ensure that you have the correct type of car. Other pine car kits are not necessarily going to be within the required specifications of the CVNDND rules (see below), so please do not buy any kits from any other craft or hobby store.
The doors will open at 11:30 A.M. Cars will be weighed and registered from 11:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. There will be a $5.00 registration fee for each car (new or used) entered. Racing is scheduled to begin promptly at 12:45 P.M. Please arrive early if your car needs fine-tuning. More information to follow so look for CVNSND e-mails and check the CVNSND website for updates.
CVNSND 2020 Pine Car Derby Official Rules:
You may only use authorized car kits and components purchased from CVNSND. Boy Scout and various other hobby kits have different dimensions and components. Do not use these car kits! They won’t fit our pine car tracks and will be unable to run and will be disqualified.
- The maximum height for cars is 3 1/2 inches
- Cars can be no more than 2 ¾ inches wide
- The TOTAL length of cars can be no more than 7”
Minimum Undercarriage Clearance: 3/8 of an inch
Maximum Weight: 5 ounces
The CVNSND Pine Car Derby tracks will only accommodate cars with these dimensions and the tracks will NOT accommodate three wheels designs! Three wheel designs will be disqualified from racing. The official CVNSND wooden dowel axles and axle screws must be used. The wooden dowel axles may be relocated, but cannot be sanded, drilled or modified in any way.
The wheels that are included with the official CVNSND kit must be used. Modifications to wheels are not permitted (e.g. washers, bearings, Teflon parts on the wheels or axles, etc.)
You must use the pine block included with your CVNSND car kit. Of course, the block can be shaped and finished. Decorative items can be added to the kit as long as the car remains within the maximum dimensions.
The maximum allowable weight is 5 ounces. You may add weights to the kit. The weights provided by CVNSND on race day prior to the official check-in are perfect for getting the car up to the maximum weight. Each car will be officially weighed upon registration. A scale and several stations will be available at the event where you can add and subtract weight. Please bring your own tools. There will be a limited amount of weights and car parts available on race day.
- Powdered graphite is the only lubricant allowed and will be provided at the event.
- Cars from previous years may be used as long as they meet all of the above guidelines.
- Only one car per active member child. Races are for members only please.
While all rules and guidelines for this event have been carefully considered, CVNSND Pine Car Derby race officials must reserve the right to disqualify any entry deemed unqualified or unable to race for any reason, or any car that they feel has been designed outside the spirit of fair competition. The decisions of race officials and judges are final. The authority of the officials and judges extend to all aspects of the day’s competitions. Rules and guidelines for this event may be modified as necessary.
All race participants will receive a ribbon and trophies will also be awarded for the following categories:
- Most Creative (Boys car, Girls car)
- Best Looking (Boys car, Girls car)
- Fastest car: Nation, Boy/Girl, & overall Longhouse
- Unlimited Class Fastest Car
- Pathfinder Fastest Car
