Sons and Daughters, it’s time to get your race cars ready for the annual Pine Car Derby! The longhouse has recently purchased a NEW pine car racetrack system. As a result, ALL OF THE PINE CARS ENTERED IN THE RACE THIS YEAR (AND IN THE FUTURE) WILL NEED TO BE THE SCOUTS BSA TYPE OF PINE CAR. THE DESIGN OF THE PREVIOUSLY USED PINE CARS CAN NOT BE USED THIS YEAR BECAUSE IT IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE NEW RACETRACK SYSTEM. If you have an old pine car, do not plan to use it this year. The Scouts BSA type of pine car kits can be purchased on-line in addition to various local craft or hobby stores.
In addition, all new for this year, we are very excited to add another layer of fun to this great event. Once all of the races have been completed and all of the winners have been decided, we will quickly set up the “GIGANTO SUPER-LOOP” for those participants who would like to see their cars travel upside down as they travel through full circular loop section of the track. A huge “Thank You!” to Sachem Mark Szczepanik for purchasing the “GIGANTO SUPER-LOOP” section of the racetrack which will add some additional excitement to the event for many years! Please note that not every pine car is guaranteed to make it through the “GIGANTO SUPER-LOOP” unscathed. Some of the pine cars which attempt to endure this special section of the racetrack may crash at some point. If there is concern about possible damage to the pine car, then please keep this fact in mind when determining whether or not your child’s pine car should be entered into the bonus portion at the conclusion of the main racing event.
The doors will open at 11:30 A.M. Cars will be weighed, inspected, and registered from 11:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. There will be a $5.00 cash registration fee for each car entered and exact change will be greatly appreciated. Racing is scheduled to begin at 12:45 P.M. Please arrive early if your car needs fine-tuning.
CVNSD 2024 Pine Car Derby Official Rules:
Due to the new racetrack system recently acquired by the longhouse, you must only use the SCOUTS BSA TYPE OF PINE CAR.
- The maximum height for cars is 6 inches
- Cars can be no more than 2 ¾ inches wide
- The TOTAL length of cars can be no more than 7 inches

After you purchase your pine car kit, the car can be shaped and finished. Decorative items and / or paint can be added to the kit, as long as the car remains within the maximum dimensions referenced above.
The maximum allowable weight is 5 ounces. You may add weights to the kit. The weights provided by CVNSD on race day prior to the official check-in are perfect for getting the car up to the maximum weight. Each car will be officially weighed and inspected upon registration. A scale and several stations will be available at the event where you can add and subtract weight. Please bring your own tools if needed. There will be a limited supply of weights available on race day.
